Cathedral Ledge Elopement: Annalise & Josh

Most couples think they have to choose between somewhere family can reach and somewhere that feels like an adventure. These two just did both, an hour apart.

The White Mountains have endless spots for summit elopements, and I have a serious soft spot for these days. There is something genuinely magical about hiking to your ceremony, taking in the view, and then standing in warm evening light with the person you just married.

Annalise and Josh wanted a location that was both easy for family to reach and completely jaw-dropping. Cathedral Ledge in North Conway fit that exactly — a huge White Mountains view with a parking lot at the top, which meant nobody had to opt out of the ceremony.

As a New Hampshire state park it does require a permit for a ceremony with guests on the overlook. The process is refreshingly straightforward, and worth starting early if you want a peak foliage date.

Short and intimate, with their closest people, and then the day belonged to them.

Once the family portraits were done we drove across the valley to one of my favourite hidden gems in the area. Black Cap is a relatively easy hike through the woods to an open, rocky summit, and it earns the walk every single time.

I have only ever photographed here at sunset, though the scenery would hold up at any hour. On this particular evening we had an absolute blast exploring the summit, surrounded by towering evergreens, in the most golden light I have ever delivered in a gallery.

It was one of those stretches where I stop directing entirely and just follow people around.

The valley went hazy orange, the ridgelines stacked up into the distance, and they had the whole summit to themselves. Peak foliage in early October is the entire reason these photographs look the way they do.

If you want a White Mountains elopement with big views and room to wander, splitting the day between an accessible ceremony spot and a summit at golden hour is the easiest way to get everything at once.
